World Mosquito Day (yes, it’s a real thing) falls yearly on August 20 to commemorate the 1897 discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria.
Besides malaria, mosquitoes can transmit the West Nile and Zika virus as well as Dengue and a bunch of other terrible diseases. They literally and figuratively suck, and can ruin an otherwise nice time outdoors throughout the summer months.
